Bucket Interview | Being Yourself in Jeju with Kelly

Welcome to the first episode of the Bucket Interview! Today, let’s introduce our beloved "엄마" (Mom) Crew member, Kelly, all the way from Hong Kong!

Kelly might be the oldest in our Crew, but she’s the “ray of sunshine” here at Bucket. Through this interview, let's get to know this lively 엄마, who’s been adding warmth to our Jeju branch for over a month!

1. Taking the Leap: Kelly’s Self-Introduction

Kelly is originally from Hong Kong and is currently living in Korea on a working holiday visa. She began learning Korean in April and joined the Bucket team in September to kick off her work exchange adventure. As an ISFP, Kelly naturally nurtures Crew members from all over the world and warmly welcomes guests at Bucket, helping everyone feel at ease and cared for.

In a single sentence: “Kelly is like the sun itself, bringing joy and energy to the Bucket Crew with surprises around every corner.”(Editor’s note: Some of my best memories are late-night beach chats and drinks with Kelly!)

2. First Encounter with Jeju: Kelly’s Journey to Joining Bucket

Kelly had planned to live on Jeju Island during her working holiday and was introduced to Bucket by a friend from her language school. “I know a bit of Korean and am a big K-drama fan, so I was really curious about life in Korea,” she shared.

Drawn by Korean culture, Kelly chose Korea without hesitation. After wrapping up her language studies, she eagerly boarded her flight to Jeju, ready to embrace her new life.

3. The Incredible Journey at Bucket: From Challenges to Growth

Working Holiday Experience

At Bucket, Kelly has worked in housekeeping, which she found challenging at first due to Korea’s cleaning standards.

"It was tough at first, with so many details, but over time, I adapted.”

Most Memorable Work Experience
“One time, a guest came back from the beach without washing off their feet, and the whole floor was covered in sand. What Even make things worse, the vacuum broke, and I felt like I was in crisis mode!”

Kelly laughed as she recalled this memorable experience.

Biggest Gain at Bucket
“Besides making new friends, I learned how to work with and understand people from different cultures,”

Kelly said, considering this her greatest takeaway from her time at Bucket.

4. Unforgettable Memories at Bucket: Cultural Discoveries

During her time at Bucket, Kelly encountered a cultural clash regarding drinking habits. Her Korean friends initially worried about her and even tried to limit her drinks. This experience highlighted the challenges of cultural differences but also led to meaningful conversations with her Korean Crew members.

Over time, they grew to understand each other’s cultures, not only accepting their differences but building deeper trust. (Editor’s secret: Kelly recently discovered a favorite supermarket wine, and it’s now her go-to, bottle-a-day treat!)

5. Advice for Aspiring Working Holiday Seekers: Stay Curious and Open-Minded

When asked for advice, Kelly said, “The key to a working holiday is to keep an open mind and embrace each moment. Life here can be totally different, but that’s the best opportunity to discover your true self.”(Editor’s confession: 엄마 Kelly, thank you for making me your fourth ‘little sister’ ><!!)
